CHAPTER 32

The dining hall was full by the time Cassidy and Ashley made it through the doors, spurring a suspicious look from the two warrior’s guarding the entrance. One of them narrowed his eyes at Ashley.

“Chef’s been looking for you,” he told her, “where have you been?”

“That’s for me to know,” she patted the man on the arm, eliciting a frustrated growl before pushing through the entrance.

“I don’t think he likes you much,” Cassidy murmured when she was certain they were out of earshot, which, given that Livarians could hear far better than humans, was well across the hall.

“An unfortunate misunderstanding,” Ashley waved her concerns away and made a beeline for the buffet like setting the meals had evolved into. It turned out this was far more efficient both labor and resource wise than serving each table individually. “Hey, Mia,” she greeted the woman, grabbing one of the plates set out at the end.

Cassidy hardly had time to notice that Mia stood, plate empty, looking at the selections with a rather faint hint of dismay. Her curls had grown out a little since their abduction, but still settled well above her shoulders but this morning her hair was pinned back rather half-hazardly and dark circles formed beneath her eyes. That was concerning, of course, and she should ask the woman the appropriate questions, but she had also noticed a group of warriors toward the door of the hall, that must have entered right after they had. She almost had to do a double take at the armored form that stood among the others, spiked black hair sticking out from his head. What...

“Is something wrong with the food?” Ashley asked, drawing Cassidy’s attention back to the serving tables.

“No, of course not,” Mia straightened and then gingerly picked up several pieces of fruit. She sniffed one carefully before taking a small nibble.

Cassidy watched, alarmed, as the woman’s eyes widened and she swallowed heavily...and then heaved. Panicked now she set the plate precariously at the edge of the table and busted toward the door. She almost made it too, before she stopped by a bucket and dropped to her knees, emptying the contents of her stomach.

Her own stomach dropped. They’d hardly cleared up the last mysterious illness, and now here was the Prime’s wife, heaving and heaving...and heaving.

...Gross. Poor Mia. She was only slightly relieved when Tor broke away from whatever it was he was doing to tend to her.

Ashley picked up the fruit that had triggered Mia’s quick exit and sniffed it. She looked back at the other woman, who was now getting to her feet with wobbly determination and nodding weakly at whatever Tor was saying.

“Ah, the hard earned fruits of my labors,” Ashley raised the rest of the fruit toward Mia before popping it in her mouth.

You made Mia sick?”Cassidy whispered fiercely.

Ashley snorted. “Of course not. I’m pretty sure Draven has that honor.”

Oh. Oohh!

The fiska root, the three day isolation of the couples Ashley had targeted...

“She’s pregnant?”

Sure enough Draven appeared next to her, concern etched across his face, but also not a small amount of joy.

Ugh. She wasn’t sure how to feel about that. It wasn’t for her, but the way he cradled her to himself as he carried her—against her protests—out of the building was rather sickeningly sweet.

“Uh oh,” Ashley muttered from where she had made it a short way down the buffet line.

“Here comes Doctor Doom.”

Cassidy frowned a little at the title, but sure enough Tor was working his way toward her now, and the look on his face was rather foreboding.

“I expected to see you at the medical building this morning,” his words were carefully cryptic, but his gaze skimmed her face, searching.

“I’m on my way there now,” she lifted the two plates she was holding before frowning down at the pile. “Do you think the patients are hungry?”

Something about the expectant look on his face shuttered. “They were offered broth this morning, a precaution as the medication sets in. You might try solid, but plain food for the afternoon meal if all goes well until then.”

I might? Where are you going to be?”

Tor tilted his head toward the armored group. “The property that contained the Tri’kyani has been found to have a few interesting finds of a chemical nature as well as the biological hazards we now know. It seems some potentially foul plans had been set in motion before the attaphus virus. The prime is worried about contamination and the possibility of traps. My services are needed with the team, just in case.”

“Just in case?” Cassidy frowned again. She didn’t like the way her stomach twisted with the words. Of course the Liviarian’s faced danger every day, scouting, hunting and gathering for the compound, but the dangers they faced were real and visible. Predators with teeth and claws. How easily had Becky, Gorth and Emily been brought down by a few fungal spores?

That was, perhaps the scariest thing that had happened since she’d been brought to Callaphria. “What’s that supposed to mean? What about the people, the patients here?”

...What about me? She wanted to shout.

Tor’s brows raised. “I am a field medic, Cassidy, it’s my job to provide for those in potentially dangerous situations, and I am happy to do so, especially where this property is concerned. The equipment the man was using is still set up, and his notes are proving...interesting.” He hesitated. “Perhaps you would review them with me, this evening?”

Cassidy nodded and then watched as he made his way back to the group of warriors, a very ill feeling in her stomach. She set one of the plates down and turned toward the food displayed before her and came face to face with a pair of blue squinted eyes.

“Oh my god,” Ashley whispered, her confused scowl fading, Cassidy cringed at what she knew was about to come. “You slept with him!”
